Yamaha APX600 BL Acoustic-Electric Guitar | 2019 Review

Yamaha APX600 BL Thin Body Acoustic-Electric Guitar, Black

We love the black finish on this acoustic guitar, but that is not the only thing which we love. Yamaha has made some excellent acoustic guitars, some aimed at beginners and some aimed at professionals. This guitar has a little of both, though it is excellent for a novice player to learn on. Let’s take a look at what makes it look and sound so good.

Body & Neck

What Yamaha has done here is basically take their previous model of acoustic guitar, which was already a solid guitar, and improve upon that slightly, not that they have reinvented the acoustic guitar, but they have created one of the best sounding guitars at this price point.

The guitar has the same classic shape, with a single-cutaway, but the body is slimmer, making it easier to hold and manage. The scale length is 25”, where the previous incarnation had a scale length of 25.6”. The string spacing is narrower, to accommodate the smaller body, and this actually enhances the playability of the guitar.

The top of the body is crafted from spruce, a tonal and resonant wood, while the sides and back are nato. The neck is also nato and has a rosewood fretboard with 22 frets. The black finish is deep and beautiful, but there are also natural and other colorful finishes to choose from. An abalone rosette around the soundhole finishes off the design nicely.

Hardware

This is an electro-acoustic guitar, so there are some electronics built into the Yamaha guitar. The piezo pickup system allows you to switch from pure acoustic to electro-acoustic with ease, as long as you have your batteries loaded and charged. There are 3 simple EQ controls, allowing you to control the sound before it gets to the amp. You also have a volume knob and frequency slider.

The remainder of the hardware is what you would expect. The rosewood fretboard is accompanied by a rosewood bridge and regular saddle. The die-cast tuners are nothing to write home about, but they get the job done. The strings are good quality, and that makes a difference to the sound.

Sound

Yamaha has used all of their experience from previous models to create a fantastic sound. The body may be slim, but the music is anything but and will fill a room with ease, making it an excellent guitar for gigs. The notes are full and pack a punch when played.

Even when you have the guitar plugged into an amplifier, the sound is subtle and distinct. You have the flexibility to change your sound on the fly, helping you to find your signature sound.

Conclusion

A fantastic guitar which sounds better than it looks. Not that it does not look good too but, with a slim profile, and unassuming design, it is surprising to hear how booming and resonant the music is when played. This is a wonderful guitar for beginners and one to advance on.
